Birthing a book is an awesome event and no less difficult than giving birth to a real live baby. Story has a gestation period that can’t be rushed. It can take years to grow a good one and that’s what Deanna has done. Story making has it’s own rhythm and time. The unconscious mind has to make connections, there’s time spent dreaming and ruminating, and the writer spends long, solitary hours working at the craft every day, year in and year out.

In Stalking the Wild Heart, Deanna returns to a landscape she loves. With the northern wilderness embedded in her psyche, if not her soul—and we know this from reading her award winning non-fiction books Wilderness Mother and Clara and Me—she weaves a breathtaking tale with memorable characters. Deanna writes about issues that are dear to her heart: The preservation of Wilderness, the freedom to have a voice, the importance of friends to help us through our darkest moments, and finding the courage to say “No” and to stand up for the life that you want.

Two other members of Gracesprings Collective will join Deanna’s celebratory launch at the North Shuswap Community Hall, 5456 Squilax-Anglemont Road in Celista. Alex Forbes will read from his upcoming novella Oranges. I will read from my recently published memoir A Raven in My Heart: Reflections of a Bookseller.

There is no admission fee and everyone is welcome. The fun begins at 7 p.m. Enjoy live music and refreshments.  The book launch is sponsored by the Wild Women’s Book Club, a group that Deanna started 13 years ago in the North Shuswap. Deanna said I proved how exciting a book launch can be when the community becomes involved.

Praise for Stalking the Wild Heart:

“This is a story of love, courage, and connection with land and home, along with plenty of adventure and deep lore of animals and nature. A moving and powerful novel.”
